target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ric Telford<\/a>, from IBM presented:<\/p>\n<p>A private cloud is not \u2018the cloud\u2019.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This is not true.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Cloud model can be embraced by everybody.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud is a delivery model for IT with these attributes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On demand self service<\/li>\n<li>Ubiquitous network access<\/li>\n<li>Location independent resource pooling<\/li>\n<li>Rapid elasticity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A delivery model that allows developers to get to consumers<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0delivery model that everyone can do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCloud is about not having to own servers.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>No capital expense\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>this is true.<\/p>\n<p>Can get a lot of the value independent of if you own the servers or not.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Private cloud = IT capabilities are provided as a service over an intranet, within the enterprise and behind the firewall<\/p>\n<p>Public cloud = it activities\/functions are provided as a service over the internet<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid = Internal and external service delivery methods are integrated<\/p>\n<p>Figured cloud will evolve to Platform as a Service (PaaS).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Deploy app to platform and the system takes care of capacity\/redundancy\/etc.<\/p>\n<p>When going to cloud, encouraged to do a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis based on a financial institution:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Divide Could implementation life cycle into 3 phases<\/li>\n<li>Analyze major cost components<\/li>\n<li>Identify tasks, skills, and considerations from each phase<\/li>\n<li>Apply best practices, fill solution gaps, and enable skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Realize it\u2019s more than just server costs, look at energy costs (cooling\/etc), real estate costs, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Here is where private clouds are going:<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday: Individual Deployment<\/p>\n<p>Today: Shared hardware and Virtualized apps.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow: Integrated Middleware platform and Image Management<\/p>\n<p>Benefits of today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased utilization of infrastructure<\/li>\n<li>Location independent deployment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Challenges of today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Building images<\/li>\n<li>Image proliferation<\/li>\n<li>Governance of changes<\/li>\n<li>Creations of composite apps<\/li>\n<li>Connectivity to legacy and off premises apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Benefits of Tomorrow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Standardized middleware<\/li>\n<li>Increased utilization of software<\/li>\n<li>Improved deployment speed<\/li>\n<li>Simplified app management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/pressrelease\/34205.wss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBM Smart Cloud<\/a> is IBM\u2019s cloud offering.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Focused on enterprise customers mostly.<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid cloud: Share data and process integration across boundaries (public and private cloud services).<\/p>\n<p>IBM Product = <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castiron.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cast Iron<\/a> to enable data\/process integration across boundaries<\/p>\n<p>Where are we going with cloud:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To fulfill its potential as the next evolution of enterprise IT, cloud comp promises to become much more than an enabler of it efficiencies.<\/li>\n<li>It promises to become a driver of business transformation, innovation and growth.<\/li>\n<li>IT without boundaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mobile and cloud\u2026 one begets the other.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Cloud will enable companies\u00a0to be more responsive in the mobile space.<\/p>\n<p>IBM sees Analytics as the \u2018next big thing\u2019 in the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>55% believe cloud enables them to focus on transforming their business and make their processes leaner, faster and more agile.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Innovation=yes<\/p>\n<p>Biggest bottleneck of cloud = network costs.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>They haven\u2019t come down like other costs.<\/p>\n<p>Figure 20% (like highly regulated) of biz processes should not be migrated to cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I went to three Cloud based sessions today, one by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibm.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IBM<\/a> (this one), one by <a href=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Web Services<\/a>, and one by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rackspace.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RackSpace<\/a>.\u00a0 I would have to say that many of the same concepts\/conclusions\/points were communicated in general by each company.\u00a0 IBM focused on enterprise push, Amazon on being the place for everyone, and RackSpace on their use of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstack.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"
