{"id":351,"date":"2011-04-21T20:28:37","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T20:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikekuphal.azurewebsites.net\/?p=351"},"modified":"2011-04-21T20:28:37","modified_gmt":"2011-04-21T20:28:37","slug":"my-notes-the-cloud-as-a-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikekuphal.com\/?p=351","title":{"rendered":"My Notes: The Cloud as a Platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker: <a title=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/jinman  \" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/jinman%20%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jinesh Varia<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a title=\"AWS\" href=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon Web Services<\/a>\u00a0(AWS) Technology Evangelist<\/p>\n<p>Lines are blurring between <a title=\"Software as a service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Software_as_a_service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SaaS<\/a>, <a title=\"Platform as a service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Platform_as_a_service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PaaS<\/a>, <a title=\"Infrastructure as a service\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IaaS#Infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IaaS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lots of new innovative business models.\u00a0 Pay as you go, One time upfront + pay as you go, Requested bid price and pay as you go, Standard and Reserved.\u00a0\u00a0 These work best respectively in the following environments: Spiky workloads, steady state workloads, time insensitive workloads, for regulatory and compliant workloads.<\/p>\n<p>Take-Away #1: Flexibility is the key for cloud options<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Can use any Programming Model, language, or OS\/DB<br \/>\n&#8211; Can use any service individually or in any combo<br \/>\n&#8211; Can use as much (or as little) and only pay for what was consumed.<br \/>\n&#8211; Can use any existing System Management tools and extend the data center to the cloud<\/p>\n<p>The cloud as a platform: Platform that provides Foundation to build innovation solutions on top, abstraction to hide underlying layers (hardware and software), is self service.<\/p>\n<p>1 job, 1 machine, 500 hours = $1500 rack and stack on premises<br \/>\n1 job, 500 machines,\u00a0 hour = $290<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Netflix.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.netflix.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> is almost 100% on AWS<\/p>\n<p>Take Away #2: Elasticity is the fundamental property of the cloud<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn off, and not pay for it, when you don\u2019t need it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the beauty of the elasticity of the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuild a Web application that sleeps at night or shrinks itself when there are no users accessing it\u201d\u2026 Follow the sun and leverage the true power of on-demand elasticity and globally dispersed regions.\u00a0 (follows the sun means high usage during the day, much less at night)<\/p>\n<p>The day is not too far away where this is viable for most: Scalability, Security, high availability, Fault-tolerance, Testability and elasticity will be configurable properties of the app arch and will be an automated and intrinsic part of the platform on which they are built.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud is a platform for computation, Research and Development.\u00a0 Time to provision a server is a few minutes with cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t have to hug your servers anymore.. You can get complete control of the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud is a platform for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computation<\/li>\n<li>R&amp;D<\/li>\n<li>New Gen apps<\/li>\n<li>Internal Corp IT<\/li>\n<li>Storage<\/li>\n<li>Integration<\/li>\n<li>Platforms<\/li>\n<li>To realize your own ideas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Take Away #3: Redefining cloud security<\/p>\n<p>In the cloud, security is a shared responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>App needs to encrypt data in transit and at rest, protect your AWS Credentials, rotate your keys, security your application.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud is more than its services..
